Native to North America, American Sendangusa is a naturalized plant that was introduced to Japan during the Taisho era. It has now spread all over the country and can be commonly found in damp places like rice field margins, ditches, and riverbanks. Belonging to the Asteraceae family, it is an annual herb.

 

Benefits and Effects:

  • Native Americans used an infused extract of American Sendangusa for healing and ceremonial purification.

  • In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, it is utilized to treat various conditions such as eczema, headaches, ear infections, toothaches, and leprosy.

  • The plant's astringent and anti-inflammatory properties make it beneficial as a tonic and prophylactic for gastritis, ulcers, diarrhea, and ulcerative colitis.

  • The tea made from American Sendangusa helps with sinusitis headaches caused by hay fever, allergies, infections, or congestion. It increases mucus secretion and expectoration, reducing edema and swelling. Its root or seeds are also used as an expectorant for throat inflammation.

Due to its strong bitterness, it is commonly prepared by either tempura frying or boiling and then served as a side dish or mixed into salads.
